thenerdygirl: (What would Dorothy do?)
Writing about feeling down yesterday was pretty helpful and I think acknowledging it in a semi-public manner was the kick in the pants I needed. Why is it always easier to write here how I’m feeling then it is to tell people in my day-to-day life? I suspect it has to do with the fact that my friendslist shares so much that it makes me feel more comfortable doing so. That and I feel like there’s less expectations, if that makes any sense. Anyway, last night I made a point of trying to get back into writing in my paper journal (yep, I keep both an online & offline one) which always helps me figure out what’s wrong and what I need...when I keep up with writing in it.

One problem I noticed was my increased smart phone usage the last few months. I’ve developed a bit of a bad habit of mindlessly scrolling through my phone, especially before bed and when I get up. The new plan is to replace that with more paper journal writing and reading, which will hopefully help me feel more productive. There will be a bunch of other small changes too but I won’t bore you with the details....especially since I want to share these images instead:

These origami pieces are part of Cristian Marianciuc Origami journal series which I first saw on mymodernmet.com. I love this series! I’m nowhere near as good as this artist but it has me itching to break out my origami papers again.

So I updated last Monday and then sort of was wrapped up in work and other social sites throughout the week and didn’t get any posting in. Which isn’t too bad because everything interesting happened between Friday to Sunday anyway. Here it all is in glorious list format, because I like lists:

  • Friday: I got surprise holiday from work after higher concentrations of lead were found in the water at various buildings at MUN, the university campus I work on. In order to test the water in all the buildings and assure everyone it was safe the campus shut down and gave everyone a long weekend. Aside from the fear of having lead poisoning, it was a nice surprise. So far no one actually had lead poisoning; the higher concentrations were just discovered in a few buildings during routine tests. Most buildings had new filters put on the taps during the weekend so the campus is re-opened again and I’m back at work this morning. I spent most the Friday holiday reading in bed before hauling myself up to clean the apartment a bit.

  • Friday night: Headed to [livejournal.com profile] strangegoddess’s place for a Sharknado 3 party and to answer your question, yes my friends and I are dorks XD. We had previous parties for Sharknado 1 & 2. It was a good time and hilarious but I would have liked to have been able to hear more of the movie. I know, it’s not a movie one needs to hear but I’m sure we missed a lot of hilarious dialog.

  • Saturday: Slept in and went out for a late lunch/ early dinner at The Club, which is a good place to check out if you’re in St. John’s and you want higher end pub food that’s different from the usual stuff. We split the onion rings, I had a leek soup and John had chili before we split desert, caramel bread pudding with homemade ice cream. They also brought us out buns with molasses butter which is so freaking good I want to make it at home.

  • Saturday night: Went up to visit/stay the night [livejournal.com profile] lady_green_bat who is cat sitting for a woman who turned out to be my 3rd cousin I found out on Sunday from my parents. That’s what you get for living on an island, btw. Relations are everywhere. Anyway, we watched Wolf Cop because why the hell not and it’s as bad as you’d imagine from the title but still somewhat hilarious. Naturally it was filmed in Canada and it even had an actor from Ginger Snaps, my favourite Canadian werewolf movie, in it. So [livejournal.com profile] lady_green_bat and I spent most of time trying to figure out what kind of a parody crossover could happen between Ginger Snaps and Wolf Cop. Then we watch The Lost Boys for the 76th millionth time because that’s how we roll.

  • Sunday: Summer actually came to the island and a small crew of us went out on my dad’s boat for a trip to take part in the food fishery. The ride out was fun but then I stupidly got really sea sick because I took ginger gravol instead of hardcore actual gravol. Lesson fucking learned. I’m just glad I was the only one and that it was only a small crew who got to witness that. Everyone else had a good time though. Once again my dad kicked ass by catching the most fish. I’m hoping we’ll get a chance to go out again and that I’ll be properly drugged for it. Anyway, here’s a picture of Signal Hill that I took before I got sick.

    My guy made coffee.
I use salt and not sugar.
    Typical Monday.

So far Monday’s been off to a slightly rough but amusing start. When I get home I’ll have to remember to label the container we have the salt in. In other news it’s been a really busy weekend. Here’s a run down in bullet form for your viewing pleasure:

  • Friday night – John & I went to the opening for the exhibit Remembering the Fallen Soldiers of Gallipoli with Poppies which I posted pictures of here. It was a good crowd and the caterer had provided some Turkish food in honour of the artist so that was fun to try. My favourite thing was this spread made out of beets.

  • Friday night continued – After the exhibit we headed over to my Department Head’s (aka boss’) house for a going away party for Cataloguing division Department head who’s moving all the way across the country. I was worried that the party would be awkward because even though my Department Head and the Cataloguing Department Head are both super awesome people there were going to be people there that I don’t work closely with and therefore don’t know very well. Thankfully it wasn’t too awkward at all and a few people I do know well and can talk to easily came to the party. John also discovered this gem in my boss’ CD collection Pictures )

  • Saturday – I had to get up early to sell at a craft fair in Witless Bay, a medium size town an hour or so outside of St. John’s (where I live). The craft fair was pretty dead but I made back my money and a bit extra, plus got to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] lady_green_bat all day so it was good in my books. Here’s a few pictures of what I made to sell -> More pictures! )

  • Saturday night - [livejournal.com profile] lady_green_bat gave me & John free tickets to attend Yuk Yuks and we had a really good time. The main act was Roy Daye and he was hilarious! I would absolutely go see him again. The MC, Jason Card, was also really good and even when the mic died he kept going, entertaining while the staff fixed it. There were two other comedian’s who also did a fair/good job but sadly their names escape me at the moment.

  • Sunday – Decided to be somewhat lazy. I just spent the morning reading, watching the Birdcage, and doing a little light cleaning. Afterward, John and I went for a walk about, grabbed an ice cream, and relaxed for the evening watching Bones then Defiance. OMG Defiance! Does anyone else watch that show? And see episode 8? Holy crap! I you don’t watch Defiance but like Sci-Fi TV shows with aliens & humans co-existing you should check it out.

Sorry for the lack of posts but John and I went on a road trip to visit Trinity, Elliston and Bonavista this past weekend and I didn't have a lot of time to post. The trip went well for the most part, with two downsides. The first one being that the weather was all over the place but then again, that's pretty regular for Newfoundland weather. Raining one minute, sunny the next and then suddenly, fog everywhere. The second, my mood. I have no idea why it was so up and down this weekend but luckily John is so super patient and I bounce back quickly. It was a quiet week but we had a lot of good moments. My favourite parts were visiting Puffin's landing in Elliston, seeing the inside Bonavista lighthouse (it was closed for repairs last year), visiting the Bonavista social club, and the Dungeon provincial park.

Hope everyone's been having a good week!

An actual update about my life and stuff going on in it is forth coming but first I just wanted to post a bunch of fun stuff. Oh and this stop motion animation video called Maker. I’m after sharing it everywhere else but I’m rather fond of it so I’m sharing it here too.
