Na Na Na Na....Batman!
So...I actually liked The Batman. Did the world need another gritty Batman movie? No, no it did not but did I need to see Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman? Yes, yes I did. Okay, I'm being a little much but I enjoyed her portrayal as it felt closer to comic Catwoman for me. I did rather enjoy Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon who's not a character that normally stands out to me in the other movies but in this one, I felt invested in his part. Hell, I even liked Pattison as a young, grieving depressed Batman and I felt that he and Kravitz had way more chemistry than Hathaway & Bale.
I've had some mutuals on Twitter & Facebook who really hated it and I get some of their points. It does not pass the Bechdel test and god knows DC has other property it could use rather than going back to the Bat-well over and over again. Even if they were desperate for more Batman content there's Batwoman, Batgirl, a better Catwoman movie, Poison Ivy, etc. I've seen quite a few parents complaining it's not for kids and how they want a Batman movie they can take their kids....which I also get but I also side-eye because there is a lot of Batman content for kids and there's even a new Bat-dog movie coming out soon. It's fair to argue there's no live-action Batman content for kids but to argue that there's none at all is a stretch.
I'd probably be less annoyed if some of the parent arguments didn't tend to devolve into the "Comics are for kids! No adults allowed!" belief. I have long, ranty feelings about how comics are a storytelling medium for everyone so that belief grinds my gears.
Anyway, speaking of things devolving, I just wanted to say that I liked The Batman and I'm curious to see what they do in the next movie. Because of course, there's going to be a next one. I'm hoping it's going to aim to be like Batman: The Animated Series which has by far my favourite Batman.
As for things in general, I've taken vacation time for today and tomorrow for a home maintenance appointment and I'm happy to have a couple of days away from work. Work is actually good as in productive yet not crazy but my sleep schedule has been fucked. I've been readjusting to working back in the office full time after several periods of working from home. Hoping to get it back on track soon. My habit of scrolling on Twitter to stay up on what's happening in Ukraine is probably not helping. Like many folks, current events have been on my mind a lot. I find I'm reading and watching a lot but not saying much online other than sharing fundraising efforts & info.
