thenerdygirl: A white and tan barn owl peeking around a wall (Autumn)

Hello new and old friends!

So I added and was added by a bunch of new people thanks to the latest friending frenzy and I meant to post a hello/about me post back on Friday. It's been super busy the past two days so that got put on the back burner. Apologies and welcome to my journal! I'm not going to do a whole post about me because I did a bunch of posts/surveys very recently so if you're really curious, please check out this About me survey or this People I post about post, or just ask away if you have any questions ^_^

Now for a little rundown of the weekend:

  • Friday - Went to Yuk Yuks comedy club Friday night thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lady_green_bat winning tickets again. We had a fantastic time, especially since all three comics and the MC were great. Normally whenever we go to comic shows there's always one comic or two who aren't that funny so it's pretty rare to have all three be so good.

  • Saturday - My little cousin got married so it quite eventful! The morning we were rushing around to make it to the wedding or, in my case, hobbling because I stupidly wore heels. John and I were almost late but luckily no wedding ever starts on time. It was held outside and not a traditional church wedding which was fantastic, even though it was foggy and drizzly all yesterday. They lucked out and the rain held off until the evening. Another great thing is that the dinner and dance were happening several hours later so John & I got to go off and do a bunch of stuff instead of having to wait around after the ceremony. We went to Smittys for lunch, hit the gym for an hour, grabbed a coffee and then checked out the Spirit of Halloween store.

Of course I forgot my wallet and could only look at the fun Halloween stuff but that was probably for the best. I would have undoubtedly spent way too much. I looooooove Halloween. So much so that if I had the money, the space, and enough trick-or-treaters to justify it, I would totally do a haunted house. Sadly I have none of these things but there was a bunch of Halloween paraphernalia that I would have purchased had I brought my wallet.

The only downside of Halloween here on the island is that there aren't a lot of activities for adults outside of Mardi Gras, which is the big street party on George Street where all the bars are. I've done Mardi Gras a few times but the fun always wore off pretty quickly because a couple of my friends always get shit faced fall down drunk. Then we're stuck babysitting them the rest of the evening, trying to make sure they don't run off or drink more. I wish there were more adult Halloween parties that didn't revolve solely around drinking. I'm hoping to have a horror movie night on October 30 so that'll be one thing but haven't figured out what to do on the 31st.

Anyway, enough of my musing about Halloween, I hope everyone's having a good weekend!

Are there any wedding pictures?! I am not a fan of attending weddings, but I really enjoy looking at pictures of them!!

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, sorry to say I don't :( They asked people not to post pictures of the actual wedding to social media yet strangely had a hashtag set up for social media at the dance/dinner....so it was a little confusing. I only posted pictures of their wedding (https://instagram.com/p/7jFlgFHTSt/) favors (https://instagram.com/p/7jFVCoHTSL/) because I wasn't sure if they were cool with pictures of them being posted. Yeah, it was fun ceremony but that was a little weird :/

Halloween is my favorite holiday ;) i love it so much

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I mean, I like Christmas and I get excited for it but Halloween is like a year long love affair lol.

    [identity profile] dreamchaser.livejournal.com 2015-09-13 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I need to go to the Spirit of Halloween store myself (every year, I like to get a couple new decorations for each holiday). I did see a couple of cool Halloween wreaths at Michaels yesterday, but they were too expensive for me :/

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
The Michael's stuff is always so expensive. Nice but expensive. I'd like to get into building a halloween decoration collection but lack storage space for anything really cool. We went to Canadian Tire yesterday and they had some great, hilarious stuff although we couldn't figure out how to shut off one of the screaming skeletons. Every time we tried he just started screaming again. It was pretty funny, I was half tempted to buy it just because we were laughing so much.

forget halloween, I wish there were more adult socializing that didn't involve drinking the other 364 days a year!

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
True. I don't really drink (one or two once a year, maybe) so I never understood why some people act like it's not a party until someone is drinking. Nor have I ever understood people who brag about hang overs.

    [identity profile] zhelana.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I drink a little more often than that, but because of my meds I can't go out and have one drink and then drive home, so I never drink in public. Also, I hate being drunk, so I try not to drink to stupidity. All of which leaves me wondering how to socialize sometimes.

Ha, I've totally won Yuk Yuk's tickets before! I love that place. I was just thinking that I haven't been to a comedy club in two years. I saw Jon Lovitz and that was a real treat. He had such a great show.

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice! I bet he would have been fun to see. My friend keeps winning them which is great for us because she keeps inviting us along haha.

    *waves* Hello there!

Halloween is my favorite holiday as well, it comes closely right after Christmas. I just love everything about it, from the atmosphere and aesthetics, and being able to watch scary/Halloween-themed movies nearly all month (not that I couldn't do that any day of the year, but it seems more appropriate to do it in October, lol).

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
    Hello *waves back*

I know what you mean, I like horror movies but I'm more compelled to watch them in October than any other month.

    [identity profile] place-to-hide.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I use to really like Halloween as a kid. Now? not as much.

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not for everyone and it seems like people I know are either all for Halloween or completely blasé. It's funny, my partner John was actually in the blasé catagorey when we met back in 2012 but last year and this year I've noticed he's really started to get into it. I think I've been rubbing off on him.

    [identity profile] place-to-hide.livejournal.com 2015-09-15 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I guess it's just not as much fun anymore. You probably are (rubbing off on him with the whole Halloween stuff.)

    [identity profile] twissie.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've ever been to a proper Halloween party. Halloween is one of those celebrations that we've imported to Norway and bastardised into something slightly different, I think. Like, kids grew up watching these celebrations on TV, and now they want to participate - but there is no proper tradition for it, so we're still scrambling to make our own.

I usually prefer horror film nights to parties anyway ;)

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't realize that Halloween wasn't a big deal outside of North American until university when I met my roommate Cat. She grew up in Austria and never really went trick or treating like we did....so naturally we had to go out. Which got us some looks as we were college aged and trick or treating is usually done by kids but it was a laugh.

I enjoy movie nights more too but I love the dressing up aspect of parties. No one really dresses up for movie nights....unless it's Rocky Horror Picture Show.

    [identity profile] twissie.livejournal.com 2015-09-15 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I first when trick or treating when I was 14. It was hilarious, but most people who opened their doors had no idea what we were doing (and were understandably kind of freaked out xDDD).

No one dresses up for movie nights????? :OOOO But... but.. it's so much fun!

    [identity profile] firefish.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Halloween is fun but I enjoyed it more in Ireland than in London. I never feel that they truly get it over here but in saying that I've been to some great Halloween parties. Were I not going on a trip over this Halloween, I'd love to experience one of the big parties they do here with various themed rooms etc.

Do you like to dress up or simply decorate your house? My flatmate did our house last year; it was pretty cool!

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be very curious to see what Halloween would be like in Ireland or in London. Maybe one day I'll travel during that time of the year and get to see for myself.

I like to do both, although my costumes and decorations tend to be on the simple side. For home it's mostly just a banner, a couple of window & table decorations, candles, caution tape, and occasionally a pumpkin. If I can be arsed to carve one. For costumes I usually have one for work that's made up of everyday clothes and one for going out, if I go out. Last year I went to work as the cookie monster which just meant dressing in blue with a blue wig and a headband with Styrofoam eyes on it.

How about you? Do you dress up for Halloween?

    [identity profile] firefish.livejournal.com 2015-09-18 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Until I was about 25 years old, I had never carved pumpkin. The Irish tradition is to cars turnip which – if you've ever had turnip – is pretty damn hard! We didn't carve a pumpkin last year but I think I will do one this year. I also didn't get the opportunity to dress up last year either. My sister was over and she doesn't like dressing up so we just went out for a normal evening. This year we are going to spa hotel to celebrate my 30th birthday (months in advance) so there might be something suitable for the children and that would be fun. Normally however if I do dress up, I just wear a normal outfit and back comb my hair so it's huge and then draw eyeliner and make up all over my face!

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-18 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard of that tradition, although I don't know if carving was common with the Irish descendants in Newfoundland but eating turnip certainly is. It's a component of Jiggs Dinner (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiggs_dinner), which is considered traditional for eating on Sunday's in Newfoundland. I like turnips butI don't think I'd ever try carving it though.

My bf's favourite holiday is also Halloween. He goes crazy for it! Now that we live together, we have a standing agreement to watch 1 horror movie every day of October. Last year we went to a big indoor haunted house type dealy called Screemers that I hated (I literally cried, lol, I'm a baby) so I doubt we'll be doing anything like that again :P But I agree, there is a lack of adult-things to do on Halloween that isn't "drink yourself to death" :( Disappointing.

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my college friends does the 31 days of horror each October and posts about it on Facebook. It's pretty entertaining but I don't think I could do a horror movie every day for a whole month. I enjoy them but I'd need a break after a few. Aww, that's too bad. Sometimes there's a haunted house set up in St. John's called Harbour Haunt but it's been largely aimed at kids & teenagers in the past. I might check it out though if they do it again.

I know. There are a ton of kid focused events happening but everything for adults only happens at bars on Halloween.

Hi new friend! *waves* I checked out both of your intro posts!
My very favorite part about Halloween is getting to do a horror movie marathon with the kids :D I'm really hoping I get to do it again this year!
The wedding sounds lovely! I like outdoor weddings!

    [identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-09-15 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
    Hello :)

When I was a kid my favourite part was trick or treating because my friends & I got to walk through the town at night on our own. As a kid that felt like such a big deal that our parents let us do that although now as a adult it's funny because our hometown was small and everyone knew everyone anyway so there wasn't much to worry about.

I like outdoor weddings too, especially if they're not traditional. I've gone to so many church weddings, which are fine but it's nice to see something different.
