Feeling reanimated

The end of September was swallowed by a sinus infection that knocked me on my ass for all of the last week and the first few days of October. ‘Tis the season it seems, as the folks around the library have been in and out due to different bugs. I masked, slept a lot, and took sick time which helped, John didn’t get sick thankfully and I’m pretty much back to normal now. Well, as normal as I ever was.

While I was resting, I blew through a stack of Christopher Pike books I bought from a used book sale a while ago. One book, Witch, was an old favourite I used to have and stupidly purged back in the mistake-filled book purge of 2018-2019. Witch was fun to revisit and review through adult eyes.

Most of the other books were ones I had not read before and boy, what a trip it was. I still like Pike for his weird twists, bizarre spiritualism, and the fact he wasn’t afraid to have the young adults & teens in his books behave “badly” but boy, some of it is pretty dated.

A bit late but here's my September book summary:

Reading

Fave book of the month: Cheer Up! Love and Pom-poms by Crystal Frasier with Val Wise (Illustrator), Oscar O. Jupiter (Illustrator)
I enjoyed this one the most of the books I read this month and the only criticism I had was that I wanted more books and stories by the creators. But even then, I thought it was a good self-contained story that left me wanting more but not feeling like I needed it or that the story was unfinished in some way. It’s a sweet story of light romance, growth, acceptance, and friendship.

Meh book of the month: Die Softly by Christopher Pike
I don’t think I’ve met a cast of characters I liked less than the teens in Die Softy. The main POV character is the stereotypical nerdy pervy photographer from the 80s trying to take voyeuristic pictures of cheerleaders, partly because he’s a perv and partly because his only female friend wants to distribute the pictures at prom as a “joke”. Instead he ends up getting pictures of one of the cheerleaders being murdered and thus begins a coke fueled whodunit story. My only favourite part is that all the characters either end up dead or in prison by the end.

Currently reading: Nothing yet but it'll most likely be Boss Witch, the sequel to Witch, Please since my library hold came in.

Playing:

Starfield My partner recently got into this and introduced me to it and yeah, I suck at shooting games. I panic when bullets (lasers?) start flying in any game and my aim is atrocious. I haven’t gotten far yet but I do want to keep playing, just need to get into the habit with it. I have a hard time finishing / sticking with video games which is why I tend to stick to playing the Sims because there’s no real finish point or goal, you just do what you want and can pick it up or put it down whenever. Speaking of which…

Sims Now that it’s autumn I’m back on my Sims bullshit. Not so much playing characters or a story, I’m more in a building mood lately and decided to revamp all the apartments in San Myshuno to make them autumn themed though I am going to try to get back into my Not So Berry Legacy Challenge since I left off at Peach gen and there’s only 2 more generations after that.

Watching

Wheel of Time I’m enjoying it and I am eagerly hoping for the moment when Nynaeve and Egwene open a can of whoop ass on everyone around them. Okay, that probably won’t happen but I am currently very invested in their storyline.I haven’t read the book series and purposefully holding off on doing so because it’s kind of nice not knowing what happened in the books and how it relates to or is reinterpreted for the show. The only downside is John keeps asking me questions because he’s used to me knowing the book version whenever we watch an adaptation of something

Gen V A spin off of The Boys that’s focused on Superpowered wannabe heroes in University that’s as bloody & graphic as The Boys. I’m also enjoying it and find myself wanting to see Marie, Emma, and Cate kick ass and get comeuppance on folks. Even though I’m feeling a bit burned out on Marvel & DC stories, I was happy that this show is intriguing to me and I think it’s largely in part due to the cast and the satirical take on the superhero genre.

Ahsoka I haven’t seen the finale yet but overall it’s been an okay watch. I am wondering if I’m starting to get a little burned out on Star Wars as well though I do think exploring other non-sith/non-jedi force users is interesting.

Catching up & comments coming soon!

I'm sorry about your sinus infection, they're so annoying. I am also feeling a bit sniffly lately, hopefully it's nothing. Glad you feel better now.

I've been meaning to read something by Christopher Pike for a while, so might give "Witch" a try.
