Volunteer Day

I forgot to mention that I ordered two rain barrels to arrive on Wednesday. Might as well save some of what falls out of the sky. I need to get my composting bin set up too.

Gracie was crashed out cold on the bed when I went to bed. She got a lot of exercise today.

Woke up at 6:30 AM. I slept on my arm funny, and I think that’s what woke me up. My clothes completely dried on the heated drying rack. Now I know the timing for using it. It’s a chilly morning. Zara is curled up on the heat vent. The dogs want to go back to sleep. Good idea.

Had a nice nap. Ate lunch. I’m feeling draggy but I have volunteer work today because there is a training session tomorrow.

The volunteer session went okay. I’m learning where more books are.

I was running errands and parked the car. For some reason, I turned the steering wheel all the way, and it was stuck and I couldn’t start the car. Shit. So I called AAA. I had to wait an hour for the guy, but it took him about one second to get it loose. Apparently, the trick is to turn the wheel and start the car at the same time.

I followed side streets home from the local grocery store, and it’s a good route for a tricycle. And I could lock the tricycle to the end of the bike rack.

So much for my plans for the evening. I think that I want a nap. Bella came in to nap with me, but Gracie’s still outside.

Napped. Fed the fur faces. I’m tired and want to get moving early.

Overslept my alarm until almost 9 AM. My lunchtime nap is being attended by Bella, Oliver, and Lily. I hope that they’ll let me sleep. Overslept my nap. So freaking tired.

The CPAP people were supposed to email my forms yesterday and I still haven’t received them yet. I guess that I’ll give them until Monday and call them back.

I forgot to mention that I found Zara’s adoption papers in the box of papers that I’m going through. Apparently, I adopted her at three years old, not one, so I’ve had her for 14 years. Still a long time.

I also forgot to mention that one of my irises is blooming! I took a picture.
irises.jpeg

Gracie finally came in at 3:30 PM. I discovered that I finally got the grass seed. About time. Speaking of grass, I should get the mower out of the basement tonight and put it into the garage. Then I can mow after volunteering tomorrow.

Oliver and Lily are batting at each other’s paws under the door in Zara’s room. My singing lesson went well.

I finished the Heated Rivalry books except for the new one coming out in June. Now I know the spoilers for the next TV series, but maybe I’ll forget them by then.

My dad said that he wanted to get a tricycle but decided not to because they don’t fit in bike lanes and bike parking spots. I think that I could take side streets to the grocery store, but I need to check out the parking situation.

I think that I want to go to bed early. I’m tired. Gracie is being annoying and refusing to come in. She’s trying to dig something out of the yard. I hope that she comes in before I want to go to sleep.

Things I've watched over the past couple of months:

A few movies and a TV show )

Anyway, besides that I'm here to report that I think my current meds change is doing really well for me. I'm getting normal stuff done, as well as writing related things, which is great, and even things like doing DW stuff and other bits of social media I keep meaning to try and check in on. It's kind of great.

I have some tarot related stuff to do over the next little wile because of 3WFDW, but I'll be doing them piecemeal while I let my foot heal up. Sadly, being in pain messes with everything else, so having brain to do things is hard.

(I hurt my foot in such a silly way. I was coming out of the shower and smacked it into a box while I was trying not to trip on something. I didn't know I'd really hurt it at first, but by the evening, I was really struggling to walk, so I had to call someone to help me do things like bring in groceries. I'm now at my normal house because moving is Very COmplicated right now.)

Water Filter, Tricycle, Rain Barrel?

May. 1st, 2026 12:22 am

I read an ad for a water filter on Facebook that said that energy shortages could affect water supplies. It was trying to scare us and it said that the filters are in short supply, but you can get water filters from REI! I decided that having one (from REI) is not a bad idea though. And I want to get a folding tricycle in case there’s an energy shortage. No, I don’t trust the way things are going. (I do have a bicycle but don’t know how to ride it. And a tricycle would be better for groceries and such.) Actually, a rain barrel is not a bad thing to have too. I can always use it to water the garden.

Overslept. I was scrambling to get myself together for my physical therapy appointment, but I decided to call in sick for the appointment and dental appointment, and I’m going back to sleep. Overslept my nap too. Jammed into the shower in case we needed to appear on camera for the presentation today. (We didn’t.)

The presentation today went well except for a moment of worry because the Zoom meeting was waiting for my boss to log on, who is at a conference in LA. One of my colleagues texted her and she logged on.

Napped after work and way overslept. Fed the fur faces. I’m making myself some food. Ate. I need to go back to bed soon.

We made it to the end of April! \o/ If you have completed any of your short-term goals or subgoals, and/or you're still chugging away at your ongoing goals, then pat yourself on the back. You worked hard for that. We've also gotten through the second month of spring. If you're doing seasonal goals, you may have finished the first of your spring ones and/or be looking ahead to the summer batch.

I'm continuing to track goals at the end of each month. So far it seems to be helping, so that's encouraging. I'm looking at my goal list more often and trying to keep ticking off more of them.

Neverwhere

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman, a novel of bold creativity and narrative genius that brings to life a world most people could never even dream of―one of ten classic Gaiman works repackaged with elegant original watercolor art by acclaimed artist Henry Sene Yee

First published in 1997, Neil Gaiman’s darkly hypnotic first novel, Neverwhere, heralded the arrival of a major talent and became a touchstone of urban fantasy.

It is the story of Richard Mayhew, a young London businessman with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he discovers a girl bleeding on the sidewalk. He stops to help her—an act of kindness that plunges him into a world he never dreamed existed. Slipping through the cracks of reality, Richard lands in Neverwhere—a London of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth. Neverwhere is home to Door, the mysterious girl Richard helped in the London Above. Here in Neverwhere, Door is a powerful noblewoman who has vowed to find the evil agent of her family’s slaughter and thwart the destruction of this strange underworld kingdom. If Richard is ever to return to his former life and home, he must join Lady Door’s quest to save her world—and may well die trying.

I tried reading American Gods awhile back, and just couldn’t get into it. So when this book was recommended I was somewhat hesitant to pick it up. But I’d watched the two seasons of Good Omens, so thought I’d give it a try. I’m so very glad I did.

I loved all the characters. Especially Richard, Door, and the Marquis. They’re rather quirky, yet so likable. And while the book’s focus is more on Richard, the reader gets enough of the other two to be totally enchanted by them. Their quest is not an easy one, yet neither Door nor the Marquis ever lose heart. They will do what they need to do, no matter how difficult. That is the world as they have always known it.

Richard, on the other hand, must make the leap from his world, the London Above that is safe, mundane, and known, to that of London Below, where there are talking rats and evil men are out to destroy Richard and his companions.

Once I finished the book I immediately started on How the Marquis Got his Coat Back, which is at the back of the book and a lovely little addition. There’s supposed to be a sequel in progress, but, given the allegations against Gaiman and the cancellation of practically anything he’s touched, I’m not holding my breath.

One, Two, Buckle My Shoe by Agatha Christie: On a routine trip to the dentist, legendary private detective Monsieur Poirot becomes embroiled in a case of apparent suicide that looks increasingly suspicious as the bodies of other patients from that day's appointments start to pile up. This is a clever, twisty, wryly funny mystery on par with everything you'd expect from Christie; my Poirot reading has been sporadic and out of order, but he's such a vivid character that it only took a few pages before he felt like the very best of fictional acquaintances. I find it impressive in general how much Christie manages to do with so few words. Her prose is very neat and precise, with minimal but to-the-point descriptions and long passages of untagged dialogue that are nonetheless easy as anything to track. She lures you through the story at a brisk walking place - pleasant, exhilarating, but not exhausting - and then ends it all with a solution to the puzzle that you could never have guessed (well, I couldn't, anyway) but feel like you should have guessed for how well it brings together all the clues.

Carefully avoiding any spoilers, I will just say that I really liked the pairing of crime-thriller-worthy events with the utterly prosaic setting of a dentist's office, and then also, paired with that, Poirot's nobly naive insistence on the value of ordinary human life in the face of grand ideologies. IDK, it was all just so nice, for a story with so many corpses in it. Our girl Agatha was perfecting the cosy mystery long before the genre was a twinkle in the zeitgeist's eye.

H. P. Lovecraft: I have never attempted Lovecraft before, but I came in abundantly forewarned of his 1) breathtaking racism and 2) rather unlovely prose. The latter I mitigated somewhat by listening to this first handful of stories in audio format, with a good narrator to make up for the lifelessness; the latter can't be helped. I enjoyed myself, anyway!

Three novellas/short stories )

Confessions by Augustine of Hippo, trans. R. S. Pine-Coffin: And now for something completely different! I've been plugging away at this all month, and it has been an experience. Augustine (St. Augustine in the saint-having traditions) is a 4th century church father, theologian, philosopher and priest from Roman Africa. He was from a mixed-faith family and his mother attempted to raise him Christian, but in his twenties he fell in with the Manichaeans (a dualist religion incorporating elements of Christianity as well as other faiths). Augustine was fiercely intelligent, passionately interested in philosophy and rhetoric, and never fully satisfied by the Manichaean doctrines; it took him a decade of uncertainty and questioning, but eventually, at age 32, he embraced Christianity wholeheartedly after being taught an allegorical approach to reading scripture that resolved all his objections to the faith.

Got up around 6:30 AM. Threw myself together and got my blood test done a little after 8. The blood test person asked me which arm, and I said, “Whichever arm in which you can get a good vein.” She said, “Oh, you’re going to be like that.” She found one. I can check that off of my list.

I really want to go back to sleep. Come on, lunchtime. It doesn’t help that Gracie is snoozing in my field of vision. So jealous!

I got my slides done for work last night, so the pressure is off me today.

Called the CPAP people and they’re emailing me some forms to fill out. Made an appointment with Weight Management–for June, sigh.

Way overslept my nap.The dogs had been jumping on me and wrestling before I fell asleep. Maybe I should wake Gracie up whenever she naps upstairs. She’s snoozing now.

Got some file sorting done while Zara was eating because Oliver wasn’t in there. Then he came in and I stopped. Every little bit helps though. I need a box of file folders (ordered).

Cat thermometer. When it’s cold, Lily curls up in the cat bed, which has fleece. When it’s warm, she sprawls out in a box. It’s in-between right now, so first she tried the box and is now in the cat bed. She’s stretched out though. Gotta calibrate!

Oh! No piano tonight. My teacher sent a note because it’s the fifth Wednesday of the month.

I should be able to book the cruise in about a month if I don’t tap my Ally savings. Pink sand beaches, here I come! Oops, two months. Four paychecks.

I’m thinking of driving up to Michigan to get Mom’s stuff in storage the weekend of July 4th. We get the 3rd off, and I can drive up then. I need to check that the storage place will be open on July 4th though. I’d load up the car then and clean out the storage space. Then I’d drive back on Sunday. I need to get Mom’s car fixed by then. Money, money, money.

I finished my latest Heated Rivalry book (the guys wound up in each other’s arms after being idiots) and am waiting for a new one to load in the Kindle on my phone.

Gracie is barking her fool head off.

Got my groceries in. Got my recycling out. I need to get to bed early because I have a physical therapy appointment at 8:35. And then a dental appointment afterward.

Oh ugh. Passports with Trump's face on them. Good thing that mine won't expire for a while.

I've slowed my horror movie roll a bit, mainly because the work I'm doing on my fanbinding project lends itself to the same headspace and timeslot as movie-watching. But I have not lost interest! Today's unintentional mini-theme is toxic female friendship, yay.

Jennifer's Body (2009): A struggling indie band turns to Satan to give them their big break, but the girl they chose for their virgin sacrifice was unfortunately not a virgin. Instead of dying, the ritual causes Jennifer to become possessed by a demon, and leaves her devoted best friend Anita ("Needy") struggling to come to terms with a Jennifer who is mostly the same cool, hot, vacuous, slightly mean teenage girl she's always been, only now she feeds off the flesh of her male classmates.

I'm boggling that I never saw this in cinemas when it came out, because it was fucking laser-targeted at my demographic (emo kids who were coming of age in the late 2000s), but I can't recall any of my friends even talking about it. I recognised almost every band on the soundtrack. I recognised a lot of faces too: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Amy Sedaris, Chris Pratt, that guy from The O.C. Anyway, it was a great time! If I hadn't been out and rug-munching for several years by the time it was released, that Jennifer/Needy makeout scene would have given me the mother of all sexual awakenings too, lol. Those heady teenage hormones were off the charts.

Fall (2022): A year after her husband's death in a rock climbing accident, Becky allows her best friend Hunter (a youtuber who has built her brand on daredevil stunts) to goad her into climbing a decommissioned TV tower together. The tower is 2000ft/610m high, rusted through, and due to be demolished soon. They tell no one what they're doing and pack no food or survival gear. The ladder gives way beneath them, and the two end up trapped on a tiny open platform right at the top.

I fucking loved this, okay? Looking at reviews after I'd finished watching made me feel kind of dumb, because everyone else was all "too much suspension of disbelief" and "saw the twist coming a mile off" and "leads are so dumb they deserve it" while I was just there like 🤯🤯🤯. Hot women with a dangerous physical hobby! Extreme heights! Confined to a single location with literally no room to maneuver, and somehow still heart-stoppingly tense and exciting the whole way through! Yes the leads are a bit dumb and yes the filmmakers are less than 100% married to realism the whole way through. (There's no point me defending the twist, because I am a very naive viewer; most twists catch me off guard, whether they're well executed or not.) But all I really wanted was attractive, dysfunctional women and vertigo-inducing aerial shots and to spend a decent portion of the runtime yelling "no no no don't do that!" through my fingers, and you couldn't get a purer, more intense experience of those things than this film if you injected them intravenously.

In Fall-adjacent news, I am greatly amused by the existence of this Getting Stuck in Terrible Places Cinematic Universe list on letterboxd. Some of these films I have already seen over the years; some are on my watch list; others I have never even heard of. But a person who can put Saw, The Hunger Games, Snowpiercer and The Blair Witch Project all together on a themed list and have it make perfect, intuitive sense is a person I can respect.

Here we go (again!)

Name: C.K. or Chester

Age: 36, nearly 37, growing old mandatory, growing up optional

I mostly post about: Culture Club/Boy George & Jon Moss (my hyperfixation of 22 years and counting), Linkin Park, wrestling (classic SMW/WWF, Jim Cornette, and my deeply cursed WWE 2K25 Universe), my OCs who are realer to me than most people, witchcraft/spirit work/folk healing/moon rituals/grief magic, retro gaming, emotional overshares that read like journal entries from a possessed poet, fanfiction that makes people unwell at 2am, chaos, and the occasional Reddit food rabbit hole

My hobbies are: Writing fic that's 70% emotional breakdown, 20% worldbuilding, and 10% people getting railed in a meaningful way, hexing cults with sigils and sass, collecting music like a religion, drawing OCs, being a haunted glitter goblin with eyeliner and vengeance, building 48-year fanfiction universes with fully documented timelines and named children, going to work like a normal person and coming home a completely different entity I'm currently contemplating doing a vlog on youtube.

My fandoms are: Culture Club (I'm writing a massive AU called Colour By Numbers spanning 1978-2026), Linkin Park (Bennoda forever), wrestling (SMW/WWF/WCW but mainly the universes in my head)

I'm looking for people who: are too weird for Reddit, too raw for Instagram, too smart for Twitter/X, overshare about their OCs like a religion, cry over character development, understand that Jon Moss deserved better, write long posts, and don't find it weird that I've named all the children in my fictional universe including the surprise baby

My posting schedule: Erratic. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes I vanish for three weeks and return with an entire AU timeline and a new OC

Dealbreakers: Racism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism, being a dick, Scientology apologists, anyone who thinks Mike Shinoda is evil because of an Instagram reel, "isn't wrestling fake?", "you still like Linkin Park?", and anti-Zionists/anti-Israel people.

Before adding me: I'm a trans man (he/him, they/them). Autistic and ADHD. I write mpreg unapologetically. I am a Zionist and tired of explaining what that actually means. Pro-AI. I smoke weed. I am extremely defensive of Jon Moss and will write essays about it. My AO3 is CampCornette69 and yes that's a wrestling reference. Woke up at 7 AM. Let the dogs out and went back to sleep. It’s a nice sunny day.

Bella came inside at 10 AM. I think that she wants a nap. Gracie is out lying in the mud, sigh.

It occurred to me that I should bring in a recycling bin when I watch Zara eat and go through some boxes of papers.

Oliver was snuggling up to Bella! They were even playing for a while, but then Bella got too rough. I took Oliver out of the room. Napped and overslept.

Gracie wanted to come in at 1:30 PM! She was waiting for me to open the door. I guess that she’s tired. Yeah, she’s out cold.

I really want to take a nap after work, but I need to get up early for a blood test tomorrow morning. I might have to finish up some work too (done).

Well, Project Go Through Papers didn’t go very well in Zara’s room. Oliver took advantage of my distraction to eat some of Zara’s food. Maybe a better plan is to watch Zara eat and then work on a box for a few minutes afterwards.

Fed the cats and myself. Gathered the garbage to go out. I started cleaning out the refrigerator, which sorely needs it. I’ll roll the can out after the dogs come in (done). Fed the dogs. Wrote myself a big note not to eat tomorrow morning for my blood test. I think that I’ll wend towards bed and read a while.
