Be excellent to each other

Recently I told myself I wasn’t buying any more books or movies till after January 2016 but of course, after saying that, did I do everything I could to avoid the discount bin? Of course I didn’t. At least I can console myself with the fact that all together it was less than twenty dollars and that all three movies were cheaper than they would have been on Amazon or Amazon marketplace.

I feel I should explain that I love B-movies, cheesy movies, and movies others might classify as terrible and that I make no apologies for this love. Judge if you must :P So what so-called terrible choices did I make yesterday?

1: The 10th Kingdom, back when I was a teen and before Once upon a time or Fables the comic book, this was my favourite interpretation of fairy tales meeting the modern world.
2: Splash, I can’t justify spending twenty five bucks on The Little Mermaid but I can justify spending five bucks on the second place childhood classic.
3: Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure & Bogus Journey double feature. Ok, so this might qualify as terrible but for five bucks I figured why not? It was the last copy and I'm a sucker for nostalgia.

Nostalgia has also gotten me into reading (or in some cases re-reading) Sweet Valley High recaps at [livejournal.com profile] 1bruce1. This series I will readily admit is terrible and should not be consumed by the age group it was written for but I will also admit I love looking back at how terrible & ridiculous it was. Essentially it's like someone had written crack fanfiction but managed to pass it off as legit.

So friends, what terrible things (books, movies, etc) from your youth did you love or still currently love?

I read the Sweet Valley Little Sister books, but never Sweet Valley High...I think once I was probably old enough for SVH, I just jumped into adult fiction. I've been itching to go back and read Christopher Pike - there was one series that I'm sure is in my parents' attic that I LOVED...though I'm afraid it's going to come off as crack fanfiction too :p Just in watching the old cartoons over the weekend, there were so many terrible television choices that I loved at the time (and still nostalgically love, but am all WTF when it's something I hadn't watched as a kid).

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, Christopher Pike! That was another favourite series, I still have the Last Vampire books and the Final Friends trilogy. They're not great but I think they're still much better than SVH. I think the only reason I got into SVH was because the laundry mat my mom use to take me to also sold a bunch of second hand books which is where I bought my collection. Nice! I can definitely understand that, I rewatched Jem during the winter. It was hilarious but hard to remember why I thought this was so great when I was kid.

It wasn't from my youth, but I saw Vampire's Kiss for the first time last year, and if you're a Nic Cage fan (or just a fan of the obscure) you really need to check it out!

I liked Excellent Adventure more than Bogus Journey, to be honest I'm not even sure I watched all of Bogus Journey...? lol

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of it but have never seen it, I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I remember liking Excellent Adventure more too but it's been such a long, long time since I've seen either that they've kind of melded in my mind. Can't exactly remember what happened in which movie.

Sweet Valley High Game LOL I am so glad my reading tastes got much better as I got older lol

The Bargain Bins are the worst! They are so dangerous. I love going into the bookstore with money and seeing how many books I can walk out with lol

[identity profile] grlicnotgmblin.livejournal.com 2015-08-18 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister and I still love to play the Sweet Valley High Game! haha!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
My best friend in the 2nd grade had that game and I always wanted to play it when I came over! We always fought over who got to be Elizabeth which is hilarious because in hindsight she was the worst character lol.

They are! Bookstores are the worst temptations, last time I went I ended up getting 4 books from the sale rack. I'm going to have to make a better effort from now on.

I loved the Babysitters Club, more specifically the Babysitters Little Sister Series.

I also LOVED choose your own adventure books too. I had one about a scary amusement park that had a million different options to the story, it seemed. Fun!

That's a good deal on Splash- I like that movie!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one series I never got into reading oddly enough, yet I was super excited to go see the movie with my friends who were into the books.

I loved choose your own adventure too, even though I always seemed to choose death inevitably. I think I still have a few copies kicking around somewhere.

I loved 10th Kingdom and Bill & Ted.

One would think I'd have seen Splash by now, but nope!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome! I've gotta say I'm surprised so many people who commented heard of the 10th kingdom. Most people I know offline have never heard of it.

[identity profile] drayca.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I likely would've missed it if they didn't have Warwick Davis. I keep up with most everything he's been involved in.

OMG I used to love Sweet Valley High books :)

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, I'm somewhat (but not really) ashamed of how much time & money I spent on them as a kid. My favourite part was probably the evil twin saga.

[identity profile] breakon87.livejournal.com 2015-08-18 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I really loved the Bill and Ted movies, but I've not seen them for awhile.

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember really liking them too but like you, haven't seen them in a long time so it's questionable how much I'll like them now lol.

[identity profile] viciousladybug.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I read Sweet Valley books, Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Choose Your Own Adventure, Encyclopedia Brown, Babysitter's Club, and so on. I read all the books! LOL. My nickname in school was bookworm.

Bill and Ted rule. I really liked Wayne and Garth too in Wayne's World. I look at it now and it seems so stupid but it was funny at the time!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here for Nancy Drew and Choose your own adventure. I also read an appalling about V.C. Andrews as a kid because our school took in donated books without asking if it was appropriate for children. Good times lol!

Oh man, that's another movie I haven't seen in a long while either.

[identity profile] dixonvixen.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 02:06 am (UTC)(link)

I have a deep rooted love for cheesy 80s horror flicks.

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. My all time favourite 80s horror movie series was Nightmare on Elm Street but I've watched and forced friends to watch quite a few terrible horror movies over the years. John still complains about when I made him watch Cannibal Girls lol.

[identity profile] domluver.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man I loved the 10th Kingdom, they used to play it all the time. I should try to find it.

How can you not love Bill & Ted especially since we're getting Bill & Ted III now.

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend had the VHS tapes and I use to borrow them from her all the time. It was a surprise find at Michaels of all places and only for 6 bucks.

That was definitely a motivating factor for picking up the double feature DVD XD

[identity profile] twodottedlines.livejournal.com 2015-08-19 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Bill and Ted's does NOT qualify as terrible, not under any stretch o the imagination. I loved Keanu Reeves circa that time-frame and those movies hold a special place in my heart.

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-21 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's reassuring to hear. I haven't re-watched either movie since I was kid so I'm worried my memories of enjoying it are skewed by age. That's what happened after I watched Jem and Smurfs anyway lol.

[identity profile] twodottedlines.livejournal.com 2015-08-21 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I might not be a good judge, though, as I still love the smurfs - cheesy as they are :) Jem I haven't rewatched, though I LOVED that!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-08-24 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I feel I should add I was still pretty entertained by re-watching Jem as an adult. The Misfits were still awesome and I had completely forgotten about the Stinger's band so that was pretty funny.
