So, about yesterday

Who has two thumbs and makes a goal to post everyday only to skip the second day? This gal! Oh well, I was considering it a pretty loose goal anyway. It was super busy at work yesterday and then after work John and I went to see The Martian. We both enjoyed it, John liked it better than Gravity which I can understand because it's more story focused and isn't solely focused on one character so you get a feel for the other people and the world in the story. I'm not sure how it compares to the book, which of course everyone who's read it claims the book is better, but I did enjoy it. I was also surprised by who was in it and John & I enjoyed making all sorts of Marvel jokes thanks to Sebastian Stan and Kate Mara being in it lol.

Now, onto the halloween/autumn goodness. I was going to post pictures of my two costume dresses which arrived yesterday but sadly one of them has to be sent back because it's damaged :( I'll still post pictures of the other, non damaged one later and hopefully I'll get the replacement one before Halloween but I figured I'd post about something else. Instead of costumes I decided to post about one of my favourite witchy movies, The witches of Eastwick!

It's campy, dated, fun, and probably the reason I liked Cher as a kid. This and Mermaids. It's loosely based off the John Updike novel The Witches of Eastwick and is one of the rare examples where the movie is a lot better than the book. Like miles and miles better. If you like the book, that's cool and I respect your opinion but my opinion is 'Fuck that book'. There are few books that I can say I absolutely loath but that's one of them. It's sexist, homophobic, and all characters are completely unlikable. The only redeemable aspect was that author used some real witchcraft lore in it but other than that, it was awful. I finished it because I kept hoping it would get better and I'd see some of the charm that I saw in the movie but no.

Now, I'm not saying the movie doesn't have flaws because oh boy, it does have some flaws but I think the flaws are easier to ignore because ultimately it's fun. The Alex, Jane, and Sukie characters are likeable leads. Jack Nickleson's character, Daryl, gets a few laughs and pulls off repulsive yet the viewer can still somewhat understand why the Alex, Jane, and Sukie are charmed and attracted to him. Plus, who doesn't love it when the trio get to pull some witchy comeuppance on the judgmental people in their town? I'll stop here because I don't want to spoil in case anyone hasn't seen it but if you like witch movies it's worth checking out. If only for Cher/Alex's snark.

Ooooh, I love Mermaids! Definitely gonna have to check this movie out. Thanks for the rec! ^^;

You're welcome. It's different from Mermaids but I hope you like it :)

Jack Nicholson, Cher, and Susan Sarandon in the same movie, and I am just now learning about it for the first time!? Blasphemy!

Clearly this needs to go on my to-watch list. I mean, CLEARLY.

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-05 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I'm surprised how many people haven't seen this movie. It use to play regularly on TV when I was a kid so I took it for granted that it was well known.

[identity profile] sandysmemory.livejournal.com 2015-10-03 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Witches of Eastwick was a good movie lol

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-05 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, it's one of my witchy favourites :)

Uuugh people who compare books with movie adaptations. Different format, different story. GET OVER IT. xD;;; A movie adaptation will always be the script writer's and director's version of the source material. Reading is a personal experience, people interpret things in different ways, it's only natural that a film version ends up being different than the source. What's the point in having an exact film replica of a piece of writing anyway?

I've been interested to see The Martian, it's been in the news here a lot since it has Norwegian actors in it (... or is it just one... either way). :P We are obsessed with Norwegians who MAKE IT ABROAD.

I don't think I've seen The Witches of Eastwick, but the title is very familiar. I might have caught parts of it on TV, who knows. It sounds fun, I'm down for dated and campy!!!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I know. I usually which I enjoyed more but I rarely let the differences between the mediums deter my enjoyment of it....unless that different version is just god awful on its own. Then I'm probably guilty of saying "___ was so much better" LOL.

Newfoundlanders share the same obsession. Anytime someone from/connected to the island does anything with TV, movies, or music and gets a little recognition it's a big deal. We're also shameless if any Newfoundlanders are in competitions that use public voting.

Oh yeah, it use to be on TV all the time back in the late 90s/early 2000s. I figured most people saw it then.

This such a great movie. So much fun. I love those campy 80s movies. Besides, Cher is generally amazing.

Besides, Cher is generally amazing.

This is true. The only thing I don't like about her work is that song, Believe. That got played to death when I was in university so I can't listen to it anymore.

[identity profile] incandescent.livejournal.com 2015-10-08 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, Believe. I always remember the version from Will & Grace. So I have fond memories. :)

[identity profile] viciousladybug.livejournal.com 2015-10-03 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like one of those movies you would consider a classic! I've never seen it but I'll have to check it out soon. Side note, I just saw that Carrie is now on Hulu. LOL.

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I use to take the Carrie DVD out of the library for the last six Halloweens I think....until I picked up the 1976 version of Carrie from a Wal-mart sales bin back in this September. Figured it was about time I owned it.

[identity profile] twodottedlines.livejournal.com 2015-10-03 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen Mermaids OR Witches of Eastwick!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That is surprising! If you like Cher they're worth checking out.

[identity profile] millionbubbles.livejournal.com 2015-10-04 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Cool costume idea, I never saw that movie, sounds like something I need to see!

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks :)

[identity profile] vibes.livejournal.com 2015-10-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen that one! I'll have to give it a try, I usually like witch movies! :D

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too :D Anything with witches is bound to catch my attention. It's pretty much why I started watching American Horror Story lol.

[identity profile] vibes.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh I was thinking of trying to watch this year because I want to see how scary they make Lady Gaga! lol

[identity profile] firefish.livejournal.com 2015-10-04 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard such conflicting reports about The Martian but I really want to see it. You'd recommend it then?

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, that's hard to say. I'll recommend anything I enjoyed but I personally have low standards when it comes to movies (you should see my terrible movie collection lol) so it's hard to be more objective on the quality of the film. For me, part of the reason I enjoy going to movies is the act of going to a movie so that tends to colour my view. I think if you like space movies in general or liked Gravity or Interstellar when they came out that yes, you'll probably like The Martian too although it's closer to Gravity in terms of feel/speed. If I had to pick one of those three recent space movies to watch again I'd pick the Martian. It's better paced and the characters were more interesting to me. However, if you hated Interstellar or Gravity and/or hate Matt Damon then I think you might want to pass on this one then.

Mermaids was a favorite when I was younger :)

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here but then, anything with mermaids or witches tends to work it's way into my favourites lol.

[identity profile] 1-rhiannon-1.livejournal.com 2015-10-05 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I never actually saw the movie all the way through. I started watching it when I was a kid staying at my aunt's house, and she turned it off. I guess she thought I was too young. *shrugs*

[identity profile] thenerdygirl.livejournal.com 2015-10-06 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, your aunt was probably right to do that lol. I mean, there's nothing explicit but there's a lot sex talk and implications, plus one or two gross scenes.
